The Importance of Self-Care: Building a Routine That Nourishes Your Body and Soul

Let’s talk about love. You can’t avoid the symbols of love and romance that are in all the grocery stores, spas, greeting cards, and even your junk mail. Bright pink and red and even purple hearts are everywhere and everyone is planning for that special night with their special someone. It’s all about Valentine’s and Will You Be Mine.

But what if you’re alone this February? Or what if you and your partner don’t really celebrate? Maybe you aren’t able to take some time away this year. Maybe you just don’t like dealing with the Valentine’s crowds. Whatever your situation, you’re burned out. You’re tired. You’re exhausted. And you have nothing left to give.

Here’s the thing: just as we need to make time to nurture the love between a couple, the love between family, or the love between friends, we often neglect a very important relationship - the relationship with yourself! That’s right, you are an important part of every relationship you’re in  - the other half of a couple, a member of the family, or just one of the gang. When your partner is sick, you take care of them. When a family member or loved one needs a hand, you’re there to support them.

But who takes care of you?

How can we ensure that we give ourselves the love we need? By building a routine that places you and your needs at the forefront, so that you can ensure you’re getting the love and care that you need. When you make self-care a part of your daily routine, you are investing in your future mental health, physical health, and emotional health. This self-care routine doesn’t need to be complicated or time consuming to be effective. It’s about setting time aside specifically for you and your needs, prioritizing your well-being.

Here are some things to keep in mind when you create your self-care routine that fits your needs and allows you to put your well being at the top of your to do list:

  1. Listen to your Body: Are you drained? Exhausted? Or do you need to escape? Would a walk in nature be better for your physical and mental well being, or would a nap help you reset and recharge? Once you’ve blocked off the time, you can choose what’s best for your needs!

  2. Choose to be Mindful: It’s so easy to get lost in the chaos and noise of each day. Taking time to practice some mindfulness, such as meditation, praying, journaling, or even coloring, can help you destress and calm your mind and soul. Even just five minutes of deep breathing, eyes closed, can help you slow down and focus on the present.

  3. Nourish your Body: We all know the “Eat a Snickers” commercials, right? Their catch phrase being “You’re not you when you’re hungry.” Well, they do have a point. Indulging in your favorite comfort food is okay once in a while, but please, make sure you’re getting your fruits and vegetables so your body gets the energy and nutrients it needs to get you through your day!

  4. Rest and Recharge: Toddlers and young children take naps during the day, sometimes even more than one! It’s a mistake to think that we, as adults, don’t need to take the occasional nap! Our bodies heal and rejuvenate during REM, so ensuring that we get enough Z’s at night and even occasionally during the day is a good way to ensure mental and physical well being.

  5. Set Boundaries: Repeat after me: IT’S OKAY TO SAY NO! Yes, I know we want to be there for people, but you can’t really be there for someone if you are not at your best. Sometimes, we need to take a step back and say, Now is not a good time for me.

  6. Do What you Love: Hobbies are an amazing way to let your mind stretch and let your soul express itself. Whether it’s writing, journaling, drawing, painting, coloring, crochet, singing, dancing - carve out some time for you to do what makes you feel ALIVE!

  7. Seek Help When Needed: Sometimes, your self-care may need the assistance of a professional. And that’s okay! Whether it’s therapy, acupuncture, or talking to a trusted loved one, don’t be afraid to reach out.

Self-Care isn’t a luxury, it’s not selfish, and it’s not attention seeking. It’s a necessity! When you prioritize your self-care, you are better equipped to handle the stresses of life and better nurture your relationship with others. Just remember that you are worthy of love, care, attention, and a little break!
